Experienced
teachers know this truth – not only do students come in various shapes
and sizes, but their learning preferences are diverse, as well.
This same observation applies to teachers and their preferred
teaching styles.
Some
students prefer to think out loud, while others want time to refine
their thoughts and ideas before sharing them with others.
Some students prefer to enthusiastically jump into a project and
figure things out as they go along, while others are more comfortable
starting with an overview of the objectives and mapping out a strategy
to achieve their goals. Some students are visual learners, others pick
up information more readily through listening or hands-on
experimentation. Most can benefit from a variety of learning
environments.
So
how can teachers effectively reach all students?
Understanding one’s own learning and teaching preferences are
great places to start. The
goal isn’t to become a mediocre teacher of all styles, but to learn
how to supplement your natural strengths with practical tips on how to
work more effectively with your non-preferences.
This
workshop will help teachers examine the strengths, key motivations, and
blind spots of their personality type, as these relate to how they can
do their best learning and teaching.
The learning styles we will explore are based on over 200
separate research studies. Interactive
exercises are designed to provide hands-on understanding of the basic
concepts of the Myers-Briggs
Type Indicator (MBTI) and Keirsey’s
Temperament Sorter (the
theories upon which True Colors, D.I.S.C., and many other personality
instruments are based). Effective use of this information helps teachers
move away from criticizing weaknesses and differences to understanding
and building on their individual strengths.
These
are practical workshops where teachers can ask questions, share stories
and insights, and learn new ways to effectively communicate and work
with the diversity of students and teachers they encounter each day.
Teachers receive personalized personality profiles and
comprehensive workbooks loaded with practical tips for expanding their
teaching practices to reach the variety of learning styles their
students prefer.
