CAREER
EXPLORATION WORKSHOP |

Do
What
You
Are! |
| When
people meet for the first time, a common question is, “What do you
do?” For many adults,
their jobs become their identities.
They become what they do.
Many adults didn’t choose their occupations.
And sadly, many of them don’t even particularly like what
they are doing. They feel
trapped and unhappy and don’t know how to get out of the rut they
are in. Is there a better way to approach this business of earning a
living? Instead of
defining yourself by your
job, do the opposite and find a job that suits who you are. |
| Young
people are at an even greater disadvantage when asked, “What do you
want to do when you graduate from high school?” Or, “What do you
want to study in college?” Most
young people are ignorant of specific careers that might truly be of
interest to them. They
may have an interest in a general field (i.e., medicine), but not be
aware of the hundreds of very different job descriptions within that
broad category – some of which would appeal to them, and many of
which would not. |
| Society
seems to be moving toward increased self-direction and increased
self-management of one’s career. Some career counselors believe 21st century workers
will have a dozen different jobs within several career fields during
their work lives. The
more we know about ourselves, the better able we will be to respond to
the many changes we will all face and to make sounder decisions for
our lives. |
| This
interactive workshop is designed to teach a practical and personalized
approach to exploring potential careers. The Myers-Briggs
Type Indicator (MBTI) is a useful tool for helping you understand
your personality and workplace preferences.
The process starts with a comprehensive personality analysis,
emphasizing one’s innate strengths and potential weaknesses.
You will then embark on a guided self-exploration to identify
core values, prioritize job satisfaction factors, and consider
suggestions for an ideal work environment based on your personality
preferences. Finally,
numerous career options from a variety of fields are offered for
further follow-up research. Participants
will receive a comprehensive workbook, as well as a folder with
numerous Type-related handouts that will enable them to apply what
they’ve learned as they continue their career-exploration journey. |
